VLADIMIR PUTIN’s failing army has endured “extremely heavy casualties” in Ukraine as the battle for a key city rages on. It is estimated some 30,000 of Putin’s troops have died in the “meat grinder” battle for Bakhmut despite claims they had advanced – with the intense battle continuing for the last nine months of the Ukraine war. It comes after the leader of the Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, last week announced his fighters had captured the east of the city. An intelligence update from the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) on Sunday read: “This area has become a killing zone, likely making it highly challenging for Wagner forces attempting to continue their frontal assault westwards,” the MoD said. It continued: “In proportion to the size of their population, the richest cities of Moscow and St Petersburg have been left relatively unscathed.
