Thai cave rescue boy who was saved with football team dies aged 18 after ‘sustaining head injury’ in the UK

ONE of the 12 boys rescued from a Thai cave in 2018 has died in the UK. Duangpetch Promthep was part of the young football team who became trapped inside a flooded cave for two weeks before they were retrieved in a dramatic rescue mission. Duangpetch, who was 13 at the time of the incident in 2018, signed up for the Brooke House College Football Academy in Leicester last year. Supatpong Methigo, a monk who taught him, confirmed his death, posting: “May Dom’s soul rest in peace.” A team of 90 expert divers – 40 from Thailand and 50 from overseas – worked in the Tham Luang caves to get the boys and their coach out safely in 2018. The divers guided the boys and their coach through darkness and submerged passageways towards the entrance to the cave system. The rescue process included walking, wading, climbing and diving using guide ropes. Wearing full-face masks, which are easier for novice divers, each boy was accompanied by two divers, who also carried his air supply.
