A near-Earth object is deemed a threat if it is projected to come within 7.4 million km of our planet and is at least 140 metres in diameter. While there is currently no imminent “doomsday asteroid” heading towards Earth, research suggests the planet’s rotation creates a blind spot whereby some asteroids might be undetected.
