A MYSTERY mass poisoning has left 57 students in hospital after they were reportedly exposed to a contaminated substance. The Mexican Social Security Institute said 57 students had arrived at a local hospital in the community of Bochil displaying symptoms of poisoning. One teen in a “delicate” condition was transferred to a hospital in the state’s capital while the rest were stable, they said. Authorities have yet to provide an explanation for the bizarre incident, but parents have begun speculating. It is the third such incident at a Chiapas school in just two weeks, sparking outrage among concerned locals. Dozens of school kids in the city of Tapachula have been affected by similar incidents, after the first bout occurred on September 23. Officials in Bochil said they were “outraged by these events” and were cooperating with an investigation launched by the state prosecutor. Toxicology exams were conducted on 15 students which each returned a negative result for any illicit drugs. It comes amid rumours some pupils had tested positive for cocaine. One distressed dad claimed his daughter had been “poisoned” and had tested positive for the illegal substance at a private laboratory. He said other students had also received the same test results. The state prosecutor’s office said it would continue testing students but did not respond to questions about the prior poisoning events.
