TRIBUTES have been paid to singer and Bollywood legend Lata Mangeshkar who has died at the age of 92. Known as the “nightingale of India”, her voice featured in more than 1,000 Indian films over her 70-year career. AFPCrowds gathered outside her hospital in Mumbai[/caption] She passed away on Sunday at a hospital in Mumbai from Covid-19 complications, a doctor said. “Lata Di died at 8.12am due to multiple organ failure after over 28 days of Covid-19 diagnosis,” Dr Pratit Samdani told reporters outside Breach Candy Hospital. Mangeshkar achieved superstar status in her home country as a playback singer – providing music to be mimed by actors – and her soft, high-pitched voice became a part of almost every Indian household. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to her, saying her death had left a “void” in the nation. Writing on Twitter on Sunday, he said: “The kind and caring Lata Didi (sister) has left us. She leaves a void in our nation that cannot be filled. “The coming generations will remember her as a stalwart of Indian culture, whose melodious voice had an unparalleled ability to mesmerise people.” India’s government has ordered two days of national morning for the singer, who began performing in public when she was just nine years old.
