IN A terrifying development, UKRAINIAN authorities in Kyiv have been distributing potassium iodine pills as the capital is bracing itself and its people for a Russian nuke attack. The city council of the Ukrainian capital confirmed it is providing evacuation centres with the pills in preparation of a potential nuclear strike on the capital. Potassium Iodide can help block the negative effects of radioactive iodine to a person’s thyroid glandRex This comes as Russia rattles its nuclear sabre as its forces continue to be pushed back even as Moscow declared four regions as their own. The pills contain potassium iodine, which can help block the absorption of harmful radiation (such as radioactive Iodine 131) by the thyroid gland in the event of a nuclear disaster – if taken just before or immediately after exposure to nuclear radiation. That is based on the assumption that only radioactive Iodine is being used. Kyiv authorities said in a statement they will be distributing the pills in areas contaminated by nuclear radiation if there is a need to evacuate.
