Incredible pictures show Spain holiday hot spots hit by two feet of snow & lashed by 25ft waves in winter storm

STORM Juliette has dumped a massive 25 inches of snow on the normally sun-drenched Balearic Islands. The unprecedented winter storm resulted in a rare red winter weather alert issued across the affected areas. Temperatures have plummeted to -2C, and are expected to remain low for the upcoming days. Even Barcelona was covered in a blanket of white today as rain and snow are expected to continue through Thursday. Upwards of 15inches will fall in the Serra de Tramontana mountains in the next 24 hours. Residents are urged to stay indoors as roads were closed due to dangerous conditions. Majorca’s emergency services have dealt with nearly 350 incidents due to the snow. Fallen trees, flooded buildings and roads and stranded drivers are just a few of the issues facing Spanish citizens due to the weather. Airports in the Balearics are reportedly operating normally despite the icy conditions. Fifty people remain trapped in a monastery after police were forced to close a road due to inclement conditions. The snow storm has also led to power cuts in towns across the region, including Valldemossa, Alaró, Vilafranca and Port d’Alcúdia.  A whopping 20 inches of snow closed the roads in the Serra de Tarmontana region. Weather authorities issued an amber alert for rainfall and wind in some areas, with speeds expected to reach up to 50mph. It comes weeks after Malaga and party island Ibiza were hit by snow and below-freezing temperatures. In parts of Catalonia, it dropped to -18C on Monday. The record for snowfall in Spain was set in 1904, when it snowed more than 1.5metres in Madrid, crippling the city.
