At least 50 people were walking across the bridge over the Ovčarsko Kablar Gorge in Serbia when it snapped, plunging dozens into the cold water. Made up of planks of rotten wood full of holes, Serbia’s minister of construction, transport and infrastructure said the flimsy footbridge was shut to visitors at the time. An investigation has now been launched into how the bridge came to be overloaded with 50 people. They were using the bridge to reach the Jovanje monastery on the opposite bank of the river. The priest who was with the tourists had warned them to cross to ramshackle crossing in small groups.  But he was reportedly ignored and the group piled onto the bridge, causing it to collapse.
