She has been held in Tehran’s despicable Evin Prison ever since. The hellhole jail, often dubbed the “world’s worst prison” has a reputation for its inhumane living conditions, where inmates are subjected to daily whippings, beatings and torture. Former inmates have previously spoken about the barbaric horrors they witnessed while in Evin– including electrocution, rape, torture and executions. Mahvash’s worried son Frud, told RFERL’s Radio Farda in January, that he had no information about his mother’s condition since the trial. He said: “The family is very worried about her health. “We don’t know where she is, and we don’t know if she’s alive.” The 70-year-old previously served ten years behind bars on charges of acting against Iran’s national security, collaboration with foreign countries, and “corruption on Earth,” among other charges. The Islamic Republic of Iran does not recognise the Baha’i faith. Judicial authorities have repeatedly called them “spies and enemies” and issued death sentences, arrests and prison terms while they are often deprived of education and banned from working. Human rights activists and international organisations have repeatedly called out the Iranian authorities for the “systematic violation of human rights” against members of the Baha’i faith, with widespread arrests and heavy sentences inflicted on them.
