According to Finnish Air Force Colonel Tuukka Karjalainen, the choice of Lapland for a new air base, worth $161 million, was made due to its proximity to Norway, which is a NATO member and a fellow F-35 user. As of now, training missions with neighbouring Norway and Sweden are already being carried out on a regular basis.
