AT the tender of age of 18, beauty queen Tammy Leppert had her name up in lights with 280 crowns and starring roles in films – including hit movie Scarface. But within months, her glam life came crumbling down as she became convinced someone was out to kill her – claiming she had “seen something she shouldn’t have” have while at a party. Tammy Leppert disappeared in July 1983 and has not been seen since The beauty queen was a budding actress who landed a role in Scarface And she also had a role in the film Spring Break On July 6, 1983 – almost 40 years ago – Tammy then vanished from Cocoa Beach, Florida, after making three chilling phone calls in her final moments and was never seen again. She attempted to call friends – but failed to get through three times, even though she seemed distraught and told those who picked up the phone the calls were “urgent”. Tammy had been planning to move to Hollywood and forge ahead in her acting career in the months before she vanished. Cops were left completely stumped – with no clues and no concrete suspects, with her body never being found and no proof of life. At least 14 sets of human remains have been examined in the search for Tammy – but all of them have been ruled out. More than 14,000 days since she disappeared, cops and her family are still no closer to finding answers in one of America’s most bizarre missing persons cases. Her family are still desperate for answers as they are just weeks away from the anniversary for her disappearance. At four years old, Tammy entered her first beauty contest – winning more than 300 by the age of 16. The blonde bombshell was cast in box office hit Spring Break in 1982, and soon after went to a weekend party unchaperoned. But according to her family, Tammy came back a totally different person as a sense of paranoia began to riddle her. After refusing to take a call at home one day, her mum Linda Curtis questioned what was wrong. Tammy said she has “seen something awful, that (she) was not supposed to see”, but would not elaborate as she was insistent “they” would come after her. As the weeks went by, Tammy became more and more reclusive, convinced she was being spied on from a van across the street. Then in early 1983, the star was offered a part in the Al Pacino film Scarface, playing a girl in a bikini who distracted the lookout during the infamous chainsaw scene. She went to stay with a pal – but on the fourth day of shooting started crying hysterically after seeing artificial blood. Tammy is reported to have mentioned “money laundering” while upset – fuelling theories she may have someone become involved with a criminal operation. Again convinced someone was after her, Tammy quit the film. Her paranoia became more rampant as she believed she was a target for poisoning – refusing to drink from open containers and insisting on eating from other people’s plates. By July 1, 1983, her fears hit boiling point as she accused Wing Flannagan, who had lived with Tammy and her mum from the age of 11, of looking at her. She flew into a rage and went outside, with the door closing behind her. Realising she was locked out, Tammy battered the door and even grabbed a baseball bat to smash the front window with. Christopher Wilder – The Beauty Queen Killer – was ruled out of Tammy’s disappearance John Brennan Crutchley – The Vampire Rapist – has also been linked to her case After letting her in, Wing was met with a tirade of verbal abuse as she hit him with her hands. The next day, Tammy checked into a mental health centre, where she stayed until observation for 72 hours after doctors confirmed she had no drugs or alcohol in her system. After being discharged, Tammy was still insistent “he” would kill her but arranged to meet her best friend, Rick Adams. She sobbed as the pair prayed in church, and as he dropped her home she told him she loved him and that she may be away for a while. It has been too long not knowing what happened to you The following day, all seemed normal as she left to meet another pal, Keith Roberts. Despite Tammy’s lack of anxiety, Linda was concerned and watched as her daughter left. Keith picked her up, but the two got into a row on the drive and she demanded to be dropped off at the Glass Bank building in downtown Cocoa Beach – five miles from her house. Without a purse or any ID, she attempted to call her aunt’s nearby costume shop three times. But as she was out of town, her aunt did not pick up and Tammy, wearing a blue denim shirt, grey skirt and sandals, instead left a mysterious, urgent message each time. It was the last time Tammy was ever heard from or seen. Almost four decades on, Tammy’s devastated family are still searching for answers. HOPE FOR ANSWERS Police investigations have drawn a blank, with some speculating she may have been a victim of serial killer Christopher Wilder – the Beauty Queen Killer. He murdered at least eight or nine girls before being shot dead by cops in 1984. Another criminal suspected was convicted kidnapper and sex offender John Crutchley – The Vampire Rapist, He is believed to have killed as many 30 women before killing himself in prison in 2002. Her mum Linda also suggested Tammy may have been killed over her knowledge of drug trafficking in the local area, though this has never been proved. Tammy’s heartbroken sister Suzanne is still hoping for a breakthrough and runs a Facebook page urging anyone with a shred of information to come forward to police. On Tammy’s birthday in February, Suzanna posted an emotional tribute as she promised to “never quit looking” for her sister. She wrote: “Happy Birthday Tammy. I have looked a very long time for you and as long as I am still alive I will never quit looking for you. ” I pray in Jesus’s name God is keeping you safe and watching over you and taking care of you and you are happy. “I pray this is the year we will find out what happened to you.
