CAROLINE Crouch’s husband has been attacked in jail by an inmate who wanted to kill him, his lawyer has said. Babis Anagnostopoulos, 34, was jailed for life for suffocating his 20-year-old wife to death at their home in Greece in May last year. pixel8000Caroline Crouch was murdered by her husband Babis Anagnostopoulos[/caption] Tim StewartHe tried to claim the 20-year-old had been killed by robbers[/caption] Caroline was horrifically tortured and suffocated with a pillow in front of 11-month-old daughter Lydia as she slept at the couple’s house in an upmarket Athens suburb. Anagnostopoulos said the couple had been the target of a robbery, going to elaborate lengths to create a fictional crime scene and giving interviews to media, before cops saw through his lies. His lawyer Alexandos Papaioannidis has now told The Sun Online that Anagnostopoulos was attacked in an Athens prison. In one incident, narrowly thwarted by prison guards, Papaioannidis said an inmate had openly admitted he wanted to murder the wife killer. David Crouch that one small consolation is that Anagnostopoulos “will be incarcerated with fellow murderers, but also perverts of every stripe” in a hellhole prison. News of Anagnostopoulos’ prison transfer comes days after the he appealed the life sentence he was given in May and a new hearing could take place next year. “We have appealed the sentence in the hope that we can reduce the life sentence,” Papaioannidis said. Anagnostopoulos will appeal on the grounds the court rejected his claim that he had acted in the “heat of the moment” after rowing with Crouch over their daughter. Announcing the verdict in May, judges unanimously rejected that argument agreeing with the prosecutor’s theory that he had been “conscious of his actions throughout.” The pilot will also appeal against testimony by the couple’s marriage counsellor claiming she was not “qualified” to give it, according to his lawyer. He will also ask for his sentence to be cut saying mitigating circumstances – like his good behaviour in prison – should be taken into account. Anagnostopoulos claimed his family had been targeted by an Albanian gang and even hung the family dog by his leash from a banister in an attempt to stage a fictional crime scene.
