PROTESTERS stormed Brazil’s presidential palace and supreme court today as cops fired tear gas on Jair Bolsonaro supporters. Supporters of Bolsonaro shoved through police barricades and stormed into the Congress building in a dramatic protest against President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva’s inauguration last week. Cops fired tear gas on protesters as they shoved through barricades Footage also showed rioters storming the nearby presidential palace and Brazil’s Supreme Court in what was quickly unfolding as a major episode of political unrest. The area around the parliament building had been cordoned off by authorities – and cops used tear gas to try and push demonstrators back. But hundreds of Bolsonaro supporters – who refuse to accept Lula’s election victory – smashed through the fences, marched up the ramps and gathered on a roof of the building. In startling images, a tide of people stormed the national Congress, many waving Brazilian flags. The building is where Brazil’s Senate and Chamber of Deputies conducts its legislative business. Bolsonaro, who was narrowly defeated by Lula in the second round of the presidential election on October 30, left Brazil at the end of the year and travelled to Florida.
