AUSTRIA will plunge itself into a nation-wide lockdown from Monday, reports claim, as Covid cases soar and hospital corridors fill with dead bodies. The country’s two worst-hit provinces – Salzburg and Upper Austria – have already signalled they’ll be introducing a lockdown from Monday. The Alpine nation had imposed a lockdown for the unvaccinated on Monday but infections have continue to rise for above last year’s dreadful peak. Austria has one of the lowest vaccination rates in western Europe – roughly 66 per cent – while its infection rate is among the highest on the continent with a seven-day of 971.5 per 100,000 people. On Wednesday, the country registered a record-breaking 14,416 cases, with 4,423 in Upper Austria alone and experts fearing the death toll could reach 2,000 this week, according to Kronen Zeitung. In Linz, nurses have resorted to storing dead Covid patients in hospital corridors. One nurse told Kronen: “There were so many deaths at the weekend that the prosecution was overburdened, we had to put the corpses in the aisle.” Most read in The Sun RACE SHAME England ace Alex Hales pictured in blackface heaping more shame on cricket HARD TO KEEPY UPPY Jack Grealish dating Love Island's Amber Gill AS WELL as Emily Atack 'I'M GONNA POP' Gavin & Stacey's Joanna Page shows off HUGE baby bump days before birth RED ALERT Europe could face ANOTHER Christmas lockdown as ‘all alarm signals are red’ award winning size My 13.5in todger is as big as NTA award, says man with world’s largest CAR BLIMEY Ronaldo returns to Man Utd training in £250k Bentley followed by security guards More to follow… For the latest news on this story keep checking back at Sun Online.
